Kendo Dojo — After Evening Practice

A 22-year-old Japanese woman sits on a wooden bench along the wall of a kendo dojo in Saitama Prefecture at 7:15 PM, in the process of removing her kendo bogu after a two-hour keiko session. The men (head guard) rests in her lap, partially unlaced — the interior leather padding visible, damp with sweat. She wears a navy hakama and white keikogi; the keikogi is visibly damp at the back and shoulders. Her hair, normally in a tight bun for practice, has loosened — flyaways framing her flushed face and damp forehead. She does not look at camera. Expression: concentrated on the lacing, carrying residual intensity from practice and the quiet satisfaction of finishing. The dojo floor — polished Japanese cypress boards — reflects the overhead halogen lights faintly. Two other kendoka in the background bow to the shomen wall.
